Competition comes to the finals

The semi-finals of the International Liszt Piano Competition were finished yesterday. The competitiors made an outstanding appearance in the full-house concerts, both in their solo pieces and in the accompaniments of the songs. out of the 12 semi-finalists, 5 have made it to the finals: 2 competitors from Hungary, 2 from Russia and 1 from the UK.

The final rounds will take place in the Palace of Arts on 17 and 18 September. At 3 p.m. on both days we will hear the Sonata in h minor, then at 7.30 p.m. the orchestra pieces. Tickets can be purchased at a discount price for 1500 HUF.

The gala will take place on 19 September at 7.30 p.m. also in the Palace of Arts. Tickets are still available in all four price categories (2500/3000/3500/4000 HUF) at the venue and at ticket offices.

The competition brochure can be purchased at the competition secretariat (Old Academy of Music, 2nd floor) and at the ticket office (Old Academy of Music, 1st floor) 1 hour prior to each round. The brochure also includes the competitors' programmes. 

 

The competition starts!

The preliminaries start on friday 9th September at 15:00. The competition is unique due to the repertoire which is - with a few restrictions - free. In the preliminaries chamber pieces and Liszt-songs are to be played, featuring famous hungarian voice soloists.

 

Official voice soloist of the competition

TÜNDE SZABÓKI, soprano

She obtained her piano teaching diploma at the Teacher Training Faculty of the Franz Liszt Academy, before attending the vocal faculty of the Music Academy for a further two years. From 1991 to 1997, she studied at the Graz College of Music and Performing Arts in Austria, where she visited the lied, oratorio and opera faculty. In 1998 she graduated as a concert singer. Between 1994 and 2000 she won prizes at a host of international singing competitions. In September 2000, she was appointed as vocal coach to the choir of the St Stephen's Cathedral. As a performing artist, her profile centres around oratorio in which she has a comprehensive repertoire. She also appears occasionally in opera performances. In 1993-94 she sang Agathe from Weber's Die Freischütz in 20 performances in Graz and Prague. A CD was later released of the production. Tünde Szabóki is a regular guest at Nikolaus Harnoncourt's Styriarte Festival in Austria, where she sang in the world premiere of Schubert's opera Der Graf von Gleichen. In 1997, she was a soloist at the Jerusalem Bernstein Festival and in 2001, was a guest at the Musik-Biennale, the Salzburg Festival and the Lucerne Festival.  Award: 2011 Liszt Prize.

 

 

 

BERNADETT WIEDEMANN, mezzosopran

Bernadett Wiedemann graduated from the opera faculty of the Music Academy where her teacher was Zsolt Bende. Since 1993 she has been a member of the Hungarian State Opera House. Her major successes have been in Verdi and Wagner. Her guest appearances abroad have taken her to Brazil, Japan, Germany, Switzerland, France, where she has worked with such artists as José Carreras, Jefim Meizel, Yuri Simonov, Ira Levin, Rico Saccani and Pier Giorgio Morandi. She can also be regularly found in both Hungary and abroad on the concert podium, in performances of oratorios and masses, as well as song recitals. Awards: 2000 Juventus Award, 2005 Székely Plaquette, 2006 Liszt Award.

 

 

 

 

 

DÁNIEL PATAKI POTYÓK, tenor

Before his singing career he graduated as a violinist in Eszter Perényi's class at the Bartók Béla Music Art Institute, Miskolc.  He began his singing studies at the Liszt Ferenc Music Academy of Budapest as a student of the famous Hungarian soprano, Éva Marton, who is still his master. At the moment he is a final year student in the Opera department of the Music Academy. He debuted in the role of Desire in a concert performance of Giordano's Fedora in 2006, at the International Opera Festival, Miskolc.In 2008 he sang the role of Ottó in Erkel's Bánk bán in the Gyula Castle Theatre, in the Csokonai Theatre of Debrecen, and on the Margaret Island Open-air Stage, Budapest. His first role at the Hungarian State Opera was Dani in György Ránki's opera King Pomádé's New Clothes, a role he has often been performing since then. He first sang Tamino in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte in a new performance of the Hungarian State Opera in January. He also sang this role in a concert version at the Palace of Arts, Budapest, with the National Philharmony Orchestra conducted by Zoltán Kocsis. In November, 2006 he sang the role of Jonathan in Händel's Saul at the Music Academy of Budapest. This performance was conducted by Helmuth Rilling. In 2009 he also sang the role of Rinuccio in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi in the Church of Kiscell (in an exam performance of the Opera department). In 2007 - in a concert on the occasion of the "Year of Hungary" - he sang in the main hall of the Music Academy of Shanghai. In 2009 he took part in a series of concerts of excerpts from Kodály's The Transilvanian Spinning Room in Japan with the orchestra of the Musashino Music Academy among others at the Tokyo Opera City Hall.

 

 

 

MÁTÉ SÓLYOM-NAGY, baritone

Born in Budapest in 1977, he graduated from the Singing and Opera Department of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music (State University) in 2002. The following year he was a DAAD scholarship holder in Stuttgart, studying with Júlia Hamari.  Between 1997 and 2002 he participated in several master classes given in the field of singing and stage performance by László Polgár, Nicholas Clapton, Júlia Hamari, Walter C. Moore, Matthias Oldag, and Martina Veh. From 1998 to 2002 he was a member of Ars Classica and subsequently of the Auris Ensemble for two years. Since 2000 he has regularly appeared at the National Theatre of Miskolc (Schaunard), the Csokonai Theatre of Debrecen (Papageno) and the Hungarian Opera (Papageno). In 2005 he sang at the Komische Oper of Berlin (Don Giovanni). Since 2002 he has been soloist of the ensemble of Theater Erfurt. He has given guest performances in Amsterdam, Nice, St. Moritz, Cluj-Napoca, Bern, Brugge and London. Competition awards: Saverio Mercadante Competizione di Canto - Altamura, third prize; Mikulas Schneider-Trnavsky Gesangswettbewerb - Trnava, third prize; Antonin Dvorak Gesangswettbewerb, Karlovy Vary – third prize; Artisjus Foundation prize.
